Background
The Cuckfield wastewater treatment plant treats domestic sewage from the village of Cuckfield near Haywards Heath in West Sussex. The plant comprises preliminary treatment (screens, grit removal), primary settlement followed by trickling filters and submerged aerated filters for biological purification of the wastewater.
The Overall Objective
The high surface area of the trickling filter media allows biofilm to establish to purify the wastewater. Over time this becomes clogged and needs replacing. One by one the two trickling filters were taken off-line to completely replace the mineral media within the filters. Bringing the mineral media trickling filters back into service has the potential to create a lot of fine filter dust can be carried forward risking breaching the final effluent discharge consent.
Solution
Siltbuster Process Solutions were able to install three temporary HB50M Lamella Clarifiers to capture and settle out any filter dust carried forward once the filters were brought back on-line. The units ensured the site remained compliant with respect to re-commissioning of the trickling filters.
