Background
Aberlour Distillery produces the most excellent single malt whisky in the Speyside area of Scotland. The wastewater from the process is treated by their onsite treatment plant, prior to discharge to the local watercourse.
The Overall Objective
The existing treatment plant at Aberlour Distillery was becoming overloaded and required careful management for treating the wastewater using the equipment on site. The treatment plant was quite old and various parts required major refurbishment.
Solution
Siltbuster Process Solutions worked closely with Aberlour and installed a Dissolved Air Flotation unit after their Primary Biological Section to reduce the suspended solids being treated by downstream processes. By carefully working with the site, this was achieved without any additional pumping stages, which not only improved the performance of the plant, it also made it easier to manage.
Following the addition of the DAF, SPS worked with Aberlour and installed a MBBR20 after the DAF so the downstream final biological process could be de-commissioned due to it’s age and fragility of the structure. Again, this was installed without any pumping and it also improves the performance of the plant, making it safer to work around.
The MBBR was installed as a ‘try before you buy’ resulting in a permanent installation.
