Rhigos Mountain wind farm

Client:Jones Brothers & Balfour Beatty JV

Background

On top of Rhigos Mountain (an environment which is battered by heavy wind and rain), Jones Bros were constructing the largest onshore wind farm in England and Wales. A total of 76 turbines were to be installed, creating a 228MW wind farm.

The Overall Objective

The large excavations intended for wind turbine bases rapidly filled with clay rich water preventing the pouring of concrete and installation of rebar and leading to the requirement for a suitable solution to treat the silty water.

Solution

Siltbuster supplied a Lamella Clarifier and Chemical Dosing System, capable of accurately introducing the correct amount of chemicals needed to remove the non settling particulates from water. A light weight Pipe Flocculator was chosen as the preferential method of intermixing so that the equipment could be easily moved from one base to the next as they were completed.
