Background
Barnfield Construction are construction partners on Frontier Park, Blackburn, a 93-acre complex multi-use development involving large scale earthworks and site re-profiling at junction six of the M65. The multi-million pound industrial and leisure development is expected to create nearly 2,000 jobs. Frontier Park will comprise around 1 million sq ft of new warehouse and industrial building, and a new services types area off the junction, which will include a petrol station, a drive-through Starbucks and drive-through KFC restaurant, a Greggs Bakery, Subway and a retail outlet.
The Overall Objective
Frontier Park has a massive site area and soil strip caused big problems during rainfall events. Even light rain showers caused significant volumes of heavily silt-laden discoloured water to run through the site and discharge to the watercourse, risking prosecution from the Environment Agency. The site manager had used every trick he could think of (lagoons, silt traps, straw bales, settlement tanks) but the water was still very dirty so Siltbuster were called in to help protect the environment and prevent a large fine and bad publicity.
Solution
Siltbuster attended the Frontier Park site, assessed the situation, made suggestions to adjust earthworks so all runoff was collected in one place. Siltbuster sampled the water and conducted field dosing trials and demonstrated 2-stage chemical dosing was the only way to ensure visually clear water was discharged from the site. By keeping the lagoon at a low level there is plenty of attenuation capacity for the next storm event.
